With Dr. Miles Neale
Nov. 30 - Dec. 13, 2018 (14 days)
By Invitation/Application Only
Space is Limited to 30
From November 30 – December 13, 2019 this enchanting, by invitation only, spiritual pilgrimage takes you to the ancient Buddhist heritage sites of Sri Lanka.
Led by Dr. Miles Neale, contemplative psychotherapist & author of “Gradual Awakening”, this program offers a profound immersion into Sri Lanka’s Buddhist culture, psychology and meditation practices. The island nation of unparalleled beauty welcomes us to explore new frontiers within and without.
Our 14-day adventure features two days in the mountains of Kandy, ten days of excursions in and around the ancient spiritual capital of Anuradhapura located within the “Golden Triangle’, and ends with a relaxing stay on the coast overlooking the Indian Ocean.
Leg One: Kandy (Days 1 & 2)
We begin our journey in the mountains and valleys of Sri Lanka’s interior with the Kandy Samadhi Center as our base. Our charming mountainside retreat is decorated with antique objects and surrounded by lush, tropical spectacular views. Kandy, the last standing kingdom during the colonial era, owes much of its glory to the magnificent Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. After our morning group practice we will take a day excursion to the charming city of Kandy and participate in the local rituals around the temple.
Leg Two: The Golden Triangle (Days 3-13)
From Kandy we move onwards to Anuradhapura where we settle at the Forest Rock Garden Resort for the next 10 days, a beautiful retreat styled after the city’s ancient heritage architecture. From here, we will conduct the main portion of our program, following a centuries old tradition of venerating eight power places called the “atamasthana” pilgrimage circuit. A comprehensive list of the various sites we will visit is below, ensuring we are kept well engaged and enthralled.
Cultural Site Visits Within the ‘Golden Triangle’:
The Sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic in Kandy
Anuradhapura ancient city & lesser known ancient sites
Ruwanweli Seya Stupa
Special Poya Day observance & ceremony at Sri Maha Bodhi Tree
Polonnaruwa ancient citadel
Sigiriya Rock Fortress
Pidurangala Rock Monastery
Dambulla cave monastery
Avukana Buddha statue
Ritigala Ancient Forest Monastery
Mihintale monastic site
Service Project and Exotic Coast (Final Day)
Each pilgrimage we endeavor to support a local organization as part of our ethical values as visitors to the beautiful countries that so graciously receive us. This year we will have a service/donation opportunity to support Project Orange Elephant a local NGO ending human-elephant conflict.
At the conclusion, our pilgrimage to Sri Lanka would be incomplete without at least one final day soaking up the sun, sea breeze and surf on the unforgettable India ocean. A perfect way to reflect upon and integrate the karmic virtue of our journey.
