With Dr. Miles Neale with Special Guests
Nov. 30 - Dec. 13, 2019 (13 days)
By Application Only
Space is Limited
From November 30 – December 13, 2019 this authentic Buddhist pilgrimage takes you to the ancient heritage sites of enchanting Sri Lanka.
Led by Dr. Miles Neale, contemplative psychotherapist & author of “Gradual Awakening”, along with special guests, this program offers a profound immersion into Sri Lanka’s Buddhist culture, psychology and meditation practices. The island nation of unparalleled beauty welcomes us to explore new frontiers within and without.
Our 13-day adventure features two days in the mountains of Kandy, ten days of excursions in and around the ancient spiritual capital of Anuradhapura located within the “Cultural Triangle’, and ends with a relaxing stay on the coast overlooking the Indian Ocean.
Leg One: Kandy (Days 1 & 2)
TO VIEW OUR DETAILED DAILY ITINERARY HERE.
After a welcome night stay at Karunakarala Resort, we begin our journey in the mountains and valleys of Sri Lanka’s interior with the Kandy Samadhi Center as our base. Our charming mountainside retreat is decorated with antique objects and surrounded by lush, tropical views. Kandy, the last standing kingdom during the colonial era, owes much of its glory to the magnificent Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. After our morning group practice we will take two days to explore various temples, the charming city of Kandy and participate in the local rituals around the iconic Temple of the Tooth, which houses a relic of the Buddha.
Leg Two: The Golden Triangle (Days 3-13)
From Kandy we move onwards to Anuradhapura where we settle at the Forest Rock Garden Resort for the next 10 days, a beautiful retreat styled after the city’s ancient heritage architecture. From here, we will conduct the main portion of our program, following a centuries-old tradition of venerating eight power places called the “atamasthana” pilgrimage circuit. A comprehensive list of these eight and several other sites we will visit is below, ensuring we are kept well engaged and enthralled.
Cultural Site Visits Within the ‘Cultural Triangle’:
Atamasthana (8 Sacred Sites Circuit)
Special Poya Day observance & ceremony at Sri Maha Bodhi Tree
Ruwanweli Seya Stupa
The Sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic in Kandy
Polonnaruwa ancient citadel
Sigiriya Rock Fortress
Pidurangala Rock Monastery
Dambulla cave monastery
Avukana Buddha statue
Ritigala Ancient Forest Monastery
Mihintale monastic site
Service Project and Exotic Coast (Final Day)
Each pilgrimage we endeavor to support a local organization or community as part of our ethical values as visitors to the beautiful countries we visit and the people that so graciously receive us. Our service/donation opportunity remains TBD but we hope to support the Bhikkhunis (Buddhist nuns) of Sri Lanka, who have only recently revived the lineage of women’s monastic ordination after a thousand year period.
At the conclusion, our pilgrimage to Sri Lanka would be incomplete without at least one final day soaking up the sun, sea breeze and surf on the unforgettable Indian Ocean. A perfect way to reflect upon and integrate the karmic virtue of our journey.
Our partner Ayurva Traveller, an award winning local wellness operation, will be on the ground every step of our pilgrimage to ensure we are comfortable. They are available to assist with pre- and post pilgrimage travel arrangements as well as any additional needs you may have.
